Equilibrium Moisture Content (EMC) refers to the point at which a material no longer gains or loses moisture to the surrounding environment. This occurs when the moisture content within a material, such as paper or corrugated packaging, stabilizes with the humidity and temperature in its surrounding environment. For packaging materials, achieving EMC is important to maintain the structural integrity of the product. When materials have too much or too little moisture, they can warp, weaken, or become more susceptible to damage. The EMC level is crucial for preventing these issues during storage, transportation, and use, ensuring that the packaging performs as intended across various conditions.
